Bergen County officials plan to install a sophisticated lightning prediction and warning system on the five county-run golf courses, joining a growing number of private country clubs nationwide. None of the courses run by Passaic or Morris counties has a lightning warning system. There are no public golf courses in Hudson County. The Bergen system, which will sound a horn warning golfers when the electromagnetic field around a golf course is ripe for a lightning strike, will cost the county about $100,000. But officials say it's worth it, given the high number of lightning deaths that occur on golf courses.
